Part of the eye: Drainage angle

Glaucoma treatment

Glaucoma damages the optic nerve, usually because of raised pressure inside the eye. It takes side vision slowly and silently, so many people do not notice until late.

Who should be checked

  • Anyone over 40
  • People with a family history of glaucoma
  • People with diabetes or high short-sightedness
  • Long-term users of steroid medicines

How it is treated

Diagnosis combines eye pressure, an examination of the optic nerve, scans and visual field tests.

Treatment lowers eye pressure, usually with daily drops and sometimes with laser or surgery, to prevent further loss of vision.

Recovery and outlook

Vision already lost cannot be restored, but treatment taken as prescribed protects the sight you have. Regular follow-up is essential.

Common questions

Does glaucoma have symptoms?

The most common type has none until it is advanced. Regular eye checks are the only way to find it early.

Will I need drops for life?

Usually, unless laser or surgery controls the pressure. Never stop your drops without talking to your doctor.
